Jordan's Principle - Cultural Support Letters for Children
Yaù ’WuìkÌ“inuxÌŒv Nation,

Jordan's Principle – Cultural Support Letters for Children

WuìkÌ“inuxÌŒv Nation's Education Department is supporting families in accessing Jordan's Principle funding for their children through individualized cultural support letters.

These letters, prepared by our Education Director, identify each child's cultural and developmental needs and recommend participation in WuìkÌ“inuxÌŒv language and land-based programming — including the Language Nest, Elder-guided harvesting and fishing activities, and intergenerational learning opportunities.

Jordan's Principle is a child-first funding principle that ensures First Nations children can access the supports they need without delay.

For our community, that means ensuring every child has the opportunity to connect with their language, land, and culture — the foundation of their identity, wellbeing, and belonging.

For registration form please reach out to Liz-Eli, Education Director at education_director@wuikinuxv.net or download and print below: (and submit to Liz-Eli Brown, Education Director)

Housing & Public Works Department Update

Yaù ’WuìkÌ“inuxÌŒv Nation,

Housing & Public Works Department Update Wuikinuxv First Nation | Prepared May 2026

Staffing: We are pleased to announce that a new Housing & Public Works Manager has been hired! Jordan Koe will be joining the Administration team on June 8, 2026, and we are excited to welcome Jordan to the team. A Housing Committee Meeting is scheduled for June 11, 2026 to introduce Jordan to the community and provide further updates on housing matters. We look forward to seeing you there.

Housing Waitlist & Applications: The Housing Committee uses a housing application matrix to evaluate applicants, prioritizing those at risk of homelessness or without permanent residency in the village.
If you have not previously submitted a housing application, please submit one before the end of June. This will allow the department, with the Housing Committee's support, to complete a full review and revise the waitlist for the fall. This is especially important as the Nation currently has an Expression of Interest submitted to support bringing more homes into the community. An up-to-date waitlist will help ensure we are well-positioned to demonstrate housing need. To obtain an application, please reach out to housing_manager@wuikinuxv.net. Following Committee review, recommendations will go to Chief and Council for final approval.

New Housing Units: The Committee agreed to submit an Expression of Interest for additional housing units. Options under consideration include two additional triplexes (valued for their faster construction timelines and lower costs), larger homes for families, and smaller/tiny home units for singles and elderly residents. Parking, yard space, and accessibility for multi-level units remain active discussion points.

In the coming months, the department will be meeting with the community to update our understanding of housing needs and to build a multi-year housing plan that supports growth and new development for Wuikinuxv Nation.

Capital Renovation Program: The Housing Committee has made a recommendation to Chief & Council to commit $1,200,000 in Own Source Revenue (OSR) to support the Nation's application with Indigenous Services Canada's Housing Support Program. This funding will help advance Phase 1 of the renovation program, which covers 18 homes in the community. The Request for Proposals (RFP) for this project will be issued mid- to late June, with construction anticipated to begin in early August 2026. We are also currently working on Phase 2 housing applications, with Phases 2 and 3 to follow for remaining band-owned, private, and rent-to-own properties. The Nation has also secured 2026 CMHC RRAP funding and was successful with two energy retrofit grant programs, with ISC funding contingent on the Nation confirming its own financial contribution.

Tenancy & Arrears: Ann Evangelista will be visiting the community June 9–12 to meet with tenants regarding tenancy agreements and rental arrears. If you are a tenant in the community, please check your email and mailbox for notices regarding your appointment. You can schedule time with Ann directly by emailing ann@6hats.ca. An arrears review is also underway ahead of the 2026 budget, with the Nation moving forward on collection and enforcement to protect its ability to access lending institutions.

If you have any questions about your rent or tenancy agreement, you are encouraged to reach out by email at housing_manager@wuikinuxv.net
UPDATE: Nanakila 2026

Yaù ’WuìkÌ“inuxÌŒv Nation,

Nanakila Annual Meeting Update

Chief and Council have made the decision to postpone the 2026 Nanakila Annual Meeting to allow additional time to address several important governance priorities.

Over the past year, a number of resolutions and action items were brought forward by membership during the previous Annual Meeting. Chief and Council are continuing to work through these matters and want to ensure sufficient progress has been made before reporting back to membership and seeking further direction.

In addition, ongoing governance initiatives and other key Nation priorities require focused attention over the coming months. Postponing the Annual Meeting will provide Chief and Council with the opportunity to advance this work and return with more comprehensive updates and recommendations.

At this time, the proposed dates for the Nanakila Annual Meeting are October 12–15, 2026. Administration is currently exploring venue options, with Campbell River and Port Hardy being considered as potential host locations.
Further details, including the confirmed location, agenda, registration information, and travel arrangements, will be shared with membership once planning is finalized.

Chief and Council appreciate the membership's patience and understanding as they continue this important work on behalf of the Nation.
Warm regards,

A message from Raven Walkus - Salmon Reconcilliation Coordinator

Imagine this: you're out on the land, rod in hand, doing something that genuinely helps protect our salmon for generations to come — and getting paid for it. That's not a dream, that's the 2026 WuìkÌ“inuxÌŒv Community Trout Derby, and it's happening RIGHT NOW through June.

This isn't just fishing. This is our people reconnecting with a practice our ancestors knew well — one that kept our watershed in balance long before any of us were born. When we harvest trout, we're standing up for our salmon. When we share the catch with our community, we're feeding each other. That's powerful.

Whether you're a seasoned fisher or you've never held a rod before, there's a place for you in this derby. Gear is provided, boat trips can be arranged, and youth are especially welcomed and encouraged.
Honoraria are paid per trout — because your time and effort on the land matters.

Community Safety Reminder - Drinking & Driving

This is a reminder to everyone using Nation roads. Drinking itself is legal. Drinking and driving is not. Children and families walk along our roads every day, and safety has to come first.

In a village this small, there is no excuse to drive if you've been drinking. What someone chooses to do at home is their own business - but once you get behind the wheel, it becomes everybody's business.

Please plan ahead. Walk, ask on the radio for a ride, get a ride from a friend, or stay where you are. There are always safer options.

Let's look out for one another and keep our community safe.

Community Peace Officer
